Getting a fitness certificate will not be a protracted process if you go to the new RTO, with an automated vehicle inspection and certification centre at Ravuthanahalli near Nelamangala.

The Transport department has put an end to all complaints of corruption in issuing vehicle certificate as they seek to make the whole process automated.

“We have removed manual intervention in assessing the fitness of a vehicle. One can get a fitness certificate very fast if the vehicle passes the test,” Transport Minister Ramalinga Reddy said.

Reddy was briefing the media after Member of Parliament Veerappa Moily inaugurated the new facility.

“The vehicle inspection and certification centre has come up at a cost of Rs 15 crore, which was provided by the central government. The building cost, which came to Rs 8.98 crore, was borne by the state government. Similar facilities will come up in Mysuru and Dharwad in the coming days,” he said.

A staffer of Rosmerta, which maintains the centre, said it can handle 150 to 200 vehicles per day. There are two separate lanes each for light motor vehicles and multi-axle vehicles.

“The automated part includes emission, speed and brake test. Apart from this, a suspension tester will measure the road contact value of the tyres, which indicates the performance of the vehicle in crucial times. The whole inspection will be over in a few minutes, following which a report will be generated and sent to the RTO office,” he said.

RTO officials said the report from the inspection centre includes whether a vehicle has passed the test or not. “There are about 40 different factors to be inspected to assess the fitness of a vehicle. The automated part covers some crucial tests, but manual inspection is still needed to check joints, wiper and indicator among other things,” he said.
