Dera head's lifestyle: hundreds of shoes, designer dresses, bulletproof house

Last Updated 22 November 2017, 18:45 IST

The report of the Court commissioner appointed by the Punjab and Haryana High Court is an eyebrow raiser on the  profligate lifestyle led by the now jailed head of Dera Sacha Sauda Gurmeet Ram Rahim.

Imported drinking water to hundreds of pairs of shoes, hats to designer dresses, the sect head   lived a king-size life. The palatial premises where he stayed had bulletproof doors and windows, the report states.

The sect head was among the few in Haryana who enjoyed Z plus security cover, which was withdrawn after his conviction on August 25. High-end perfumes, cosmetic items to expensive vases and spy cameras found during the search have also been mentioned in the report.

A three-day sanitisation drive was undertaken inside the controversial sect on the directions of the High Court, which appointed A K S Panwar as the court commissioner for the task. According to the report, during the drive, officials stumbled upon a window in Gurmeet Ram Rahim's room that was concealed by an wooden almirah and connected to the Sadhvi (women disciples) hostel. Massage oil was also found in his room.

Stolen vehicles

Vehicles that may have either been stolen or illegally procured were also found during the   drive in Sirsa. Dera managers could not establish the ownership details of these vehicles.

The sect chief earned thousands of crores of rupees through various means, but today he earns only Rs 40 as daily wage in the jail where he works as a gardener. In about three months behind bars in the Rohtak jail, sources said, Ram Rahim has earned over Rs 3,500. However, he has spent close to Rs 18,000 during his jail period on bottled water, milk, etc.

An unclaimed outdoor broadcast (OB) van was found within the sect. The court commissioner in his report has suggested to the High Court that the suspicious presence of the OB van be probed to check whether the van was used for any espionage activity or to broadcast any secret information overseas. The CBI court has sentenced the sect chief to 20 years in jail in two separate cases of rape.
