At a special syndicate meeting held on Wednesday, Bangalore University has withdrawn its decision to charge students Rs 500 for their rank certificates, for the upcoming 53rd convocation.

It was decided to withdraw the circular that asked students to pay Rs 500 and students who have already paid the amount would be refunded.

Gold medals for the first rank holders will be given as usual by the University. In case of students receiving endowments for various subjects, the gold medal will be given if the interest received on the fund is sufficient. In cases, when the amount received as interest is not sufficient, the interest will be given as a cash prize along with a certificate.

It was also decided to approach former students and teachers, asking them to establish more endowment funds.

In the proceedings, the Registrar (Evaluation) Prof Shivaraju said the amount the university was getting as interest from the fund set up by donors in the university's maiden years was meagre, ranging from Rs 82 to Rs 250.
