Oppn all set to confront govt over price rise

Last Updated 25 July 2010, 19:07 IST

The Opposition will press for an adjournment motion on the price rise on Tuesday morning as the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha are expected to be adjourned immediately after obituary references on the first day. With the government in no mood to accept the
Opposition demand, a confrontation between the two sides is expected from the word go.

In a veiled warning, Leader of Opposition Sushma Swaraj on Sunday said there would not be any disturbance if the government heeded their demand. She said UPA partners the DMK and Trinamool Congress, too, wanted a discussion on the price rise issue.

Swaraj alleged that the government had tried to break the Opposition unity by its moves like the CBI filing chargesheet against former Gujarat minister Amit Shah, but failed as the Opposition has made a common cause on the issue of price rise.

Indo-Pak talks, illegal mining and situation in Jammu and Kashmir are among the main issues which will be raised  during the session. The Bhopal tragedy is also expected to generate heat with the BJP planning to seek a discussion under a rule that entails voting.

“The Opposition will demand annulment of the agreement reached with the Union Carbide under which ‘paltry’ relief was given to those affected people in the 1984 tragedy,” Swaraj said after a meeting of political leaders on the eve of the session. Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee is expected to be targeted in the session with almost all parties demanding a discussion on the spate of  railway accidents.
