England, batting first, made 161 for six in their 20 overs. But the West Indies were set a revised target of 80 in nine overs under Duckworth-Lewis method after heavy rain interrupted into the match.
The West Indians had a shaky start, losing five wickets for 45 runs but found their men of the moment in Shivnarine Chanderpaul (17) and Ramnaresh Sarwan (19), who took their team to 82 in 8.2 overs.
Earlier, Ravi Bopara’s elegant half-century helped England reach 161 for six.
Bopara (55) looked in excellent touch as he reached his 50 in 43 balls with the help of five boundaries. He also starred in two crucial partnerships, 56 with Kevin Pietersen and another 34 with Owais Shah to help England register a competitive total.
Knowing that only a win would ensure a semifinal spot, England won the toss and opted to bat but lost Luke Wright (6) early, trying to hoist Kieron Pollard out of the park.
Pietersen (31) joined Bopara and the former greeted Pollard with back-to-back fours.
Pietersen seemed in good nick, showing no signs of the Achilles injury that has been plaguing him off late.
He was well complemented by Bopara, who batted with elan. The duo brought in their 50 off 34 balls but Pietersen fell soon after going for a needless shot. He went for a big heave off Lendl Simmons but found Andre Fletcher at the mid-on boundary, ending his 19-ball stay at the crease that included five boundaries. Shah (18) joined Bopara and the duo scored at a quick pace before Fletcher plucked the former at the mid-on boundary off Dwayne Bravo. West Indies captain Chris Gayle then dealt a body blow to England when he trapped Bopara in front.
