Complaints over clogged drains storm in

Last Updated 25 September 2010, 19:38 IST

Though the KSRTC quarters flooded during rains, the Friday’s deluge turned the situation worse with the entire stretch filled with silt and gravel.

The small cement barricade placed at their entrance to prevent the rainwater, couldn’t stand the heavy downpour. People had to spend their night on their cot till the water receded. However, many people could not save their electronic gadgets from getting damaged.

A resident of the KSRTC quarters, Nanda blamed the poor cleaning of the major stormwater drain, which flooded the houses. "Every time we hear the same excuse from the BBMP officials that the stormwater drain is clogged. Is this the rain preparedness of the BBMP?" questioned an irked Nanda.

The situation was even worse in the area adjacent to the KSRTC quarters where a house built on the bank of stormwater drain collapsed. However, sensing the danger when the stormwater drain began to swell and a compound collapsed, the owner of the house Amzad left to a safe place.

His fear came true in the midnight when the house came down crashing. Neighbours said Amzad has temporarily shifted to his relative’s house in another locality .

‘Power’less

The rain fury on Friday disrupted power supply in many areas. At Indira Nagar 1st Stage, power supply did not resume even 30 hours after the rains.

A resident, Subramanyan complained that the Bescom officers did not respond when he called to get the power supply restored. "We could not draw water from our borewells due to the power failure for 30 hours," said Subramanyan.

In some parts of Kaggadasapura, there was no power for 12 hours on Saturday, complained Ramanjanam, a resident. There was no power supply in some parts of Chinnappanahalli from 4 am till late Saturday night.
