Assembly Elections 2024: Congress appoints six senior leaders to oversee post-poll scenario in Maharashtra, Jharkhand

New Delhi: Congress on Friday appointed six senior leaders, including Ashok Gehlot and G Parameshwara, as Observers for Maharashtra and Jharkhand to "oversee post-election scenario".

Former chief ministers Gehlot (Rajasthan) and Bhupesh Baghel (Chhattisgarh) and Karnataka Home Minister G Parameshwara have been assigned Maharashtra, while senior leader Tariq Anwar, Telangana Deputy Chief Minister M Bhatti Vikramarka and Congress national joint secretary Krishna Allavuru will look after Jharkhand.

The leaders will be in Mumbai and Ranchi respectively and help state leadership to form strategies to deal with emerging political situations in case there is a close result or a hung assembly. The Observers will also act as the "eyes and ears" of the party’s central leadership.

In Maharashtra, the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA), which constituents Congress, Shiv Sena (UBT) and NCP(SP) among others, has decided to ensure that all its winners stay under one roof to make sure that there is no poaching attempt by the rival Mahayuti in case of a close fight. Similar concerns are also there in Jharkhand.

It remains to be seen if the upcoming polls help BJP cement its position further or provide a fillip to I.N.D.I.A.
