Actor Dhruva Sarja's latest movie Pogaru opened to a thunderous response at the Karnataka box office on Friday (February 19), grossing nearly Rs eight crore on day 1. The film witnessed a drop on Saturday in 'A' centres but remained strong in most 'B' and 'C' markets.

According to industry trackers its second day collection is expected to be around Rs four crore, a decent figure by Sandalwood standards. The general perception is that it has not been able to work its magic in the bigger centres as it has an 'outdated' storyline with plenty of cliched commercial elements. Its performance has also been affected by the underwhelming reviews as many critics have criticised Pogaru for 'demeaning women'.

These factors have, however, not affected the film in the smaller centres as it has garnered a fair deal of attention because of the immensely popular Karabuu song. Pogaru is likely to pick up on Sunday as it faces limited competition from the new releases in Karnataka. The jump in collections, however, may not be as impressive as expected due to the mixed to negative word of mouth. A lot will ultimately depend on Dhruva's star power.

The response to Pogaru, either way, proves that the Kannada film industry is slowly returning to normal after the Covid-19 pandemic. This is good news for films such as Yash's KGF Chapter 2, the Darshan-starrer Roberrt and the Anup Bhandari-directed Vikrant Rona, which are slated to release in the near future.

Pogaru has been directed by Nanda Kishore and revolves around the journey of a rogue. It stars Rashmika Mandanna as the leading lady and marks her first collaboration with the 'Action Prince'.

The Kirik Party actor is going through a good phase on the professional front. She scored back-to-back hits with the Telugu films Sarileru Neekevvaru, co-starring Mahesh Babu, and Nithiin's Bheeshma. It remains to be seen if Pogaru proves to be another memorable release for the 'Karnataka Crush'.
