In a success story of a hamali’s daughter, a girl not only bagged the first rank in MA Kannada but also won seven gold medals and a cash prize, the highest medals in Kuvempu University’s 29th convocation held at Jnana Sahyadri campus, Shankaraghatta, on Friday.

With her accomplishment, she proved that poverty can never become an impediment to achieve success.

Nethravathy K A, a student of IDSG College, Chikkamagaluru, has achieved this braving all the odds. Though she does not come from an academically qualified family, she had the urge to do well in academics.

Her parents Annappa and Tangyamma, residents of Kuruvangi village in Chikkamagaluru, serving as daily wage workers, toiled for the success of their daughter. They work in a coffee estate and load and unload sacks ferrying coffee seeds. Realising the importance of education, they instilled love and passion towards academics in her and admitted her to a government school. She used poverty as a ladder to fare well in academics. Her elder brother Pratap and sister Mamata also did their best in helping her come out with flying colours.

Netravathy brought laurels to IDSG Government First Grade College in Chikkamagaluru after a gap of four years by securing the first rank in MA Kannada. Earlier, Roopa of the same college had bagged six gold medals. Now, Netravathy has outscored Roopa by bagging an extra gold medal. The college has also bagged second and third gold medals.

Her parents were on cloud nine after seeing their daughter’s achievement. Her brother Pratap had earlier made them proud by joining the Police Department.

Speaking to DH, Netravathy K A said, “The support and encouragement of parents, teachers, and friends played a vital role in achieving this. I have the ambition of becoming a lecturer. I want to inform the importance of education to the students. Besides, I would like to convey a message that poverty can never become a hurdle for achievement.”

G O Sadhya from the same college has won three gold medals in English M A. Sandhya belongs to Bannur near Balehonnur. She has been awarded Prof Shantinatha Desai Memorial gold medal, Ramaiah Memorial gold medal and Keshavarao Agaraked gold medal.
