Bihar girl tops NEET

Bihar’s Kalpana Kumari has topped the national eligibility-cum-entrance test (NEET) conducted by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE).

The second spot was grabbed by Rohan Purohit from Telangana while Himanshu Sharma from Delhi came third. The CBSE declared the results of the nationwide test on Monday.

As many as 7,14,562 students out of a total of 12,69,922 students, who took the test, were declared as qualified.

A total of 13,26,725 students had registered for the test. Of them, however, 56,803 students did not turn up to take the examination.

The number of women taking the examination remained higher than those of the men. The number of women qualifying the test also remained higher than those of men.

Over 7.16 lakh women took the test. Out of them, 4,02,162 women were declared as qualified. Of 5,53,849 men, 3,12,399 were declared qualified in the nationwide test.

Though the country topper hailed from Bihar, the highest number of NEET aspirants who cleared the nationwide test came from Uttar Pradesh (76,778) followed by Maharashtra (70184), Rajasthan (58,738) and Karnataka (54163).

Kalpana grabbed the top slot by securing 691 marks out of 720 (total marks) while Rohan secured second rank scoring 690 in the test. Himanshu also got 690 marks in the test but he was ranked third.

When there is a tie in the total score, the evaluators rank such students as per their subject-wise performance in the entrance examination.

The all India merit list was prepared in percentile determined on the basis of highest marks secured in the test.
Over 2. 68 lakh students in general category qualified the test while the number of other backward classes (OBC) students qualifying the test came at 3,27,575, scheduled caste (SC) 87,311, scheduled tribe (ST) 31,360.

The CBSE conducted the test on May 6 for admission to undergraduate MBBS programmes offered by medical colleges in the country.

The test was held in 11 languages which included English, Hindi and Kannada among other Indian languages. Nearly 80% of the total students took the test in English language while the percentage of students taking the entrance examination in Hindi came at 11.04. The percentage of students taking the test in other Indian languages remained very low. While the over all percentage of students taking the test in regional language came at 8.98, just 0.15% students took the NEET in Telugu, 0.08% in Marathi, 1.86% Tamil and 0.13% Urdu and Kannada 0.06%.
