Driver's licence to be suspended if traffic challans not cleared till Apr 1: Report

If pending traffic challans have not been cleared, you may have to face suspension of your driver's licence, starting from April 1.

As per a report by News18, the authorities have stated that severe actions will be taken if the challans are not cleared. The vehicle owners might have to pay penalties and licence can be confiscated.

If one fails to clear the e-challans, their licence will be suspended for three months. Moreover, if there are three challans for red light violations or reckless driving, a suspension of three months will be noted.

The report further mentioned that the new regulations have been introduced following the concern over the low recovery rates of e-challan.

As per the publication, only 40 per cent of fines have been collected.

Delhi is said to have the lowest recovery rates of e challans which is 14 per cent, at second is Karnataka with 21 per cent, followed by Tamil Nadu and Uttar Pradesh.

Additionally, the government is also planning to hike the insurance premium for those who have not paid the challan in the previous year.

However, sometimes the vehicle owners might be unable to pay the challan due to technical issues or delayed notifications, for which the government is planning to implement 'comprehensive standard operating procedure'. With this the owners will be provided with monthly alerts and minimum specifications for traffic cameras.

Meanwhile in Delhi, the traffic enforcement has got smarter with a 360-degree rotatable AI-powered 4D radar interceptor, which is capable of spotting violations like overspeeding, driving without a seatbelt, and using a mobile phone while driving. It would also issue automated e-challans without any human intervention.

The AI-powered 4D radar interceptor will be mounted on top of police vehicles, a police source said, adding it will generate automated e-challan for violations, eliminating the need for human intervention.

The system can detect a wide range of violations, including overspeeding, driving a four-wheeler without a seatbelt, use of a mobile phone while driving, riding without a helmet, triple-riding on two-wheelers, pillion riding without protective headgear, and using fancy or designer number plates.
