<p>Ahmedabad: Days after the Uttarakhand government implemented the <a href="https://www.deccanherald.com/tags/uniform-civil-code">Uniform Civil Code</a> (UCC), the Bhupendra Patel-led BJP government in Gujarat on Tuesday announced setting up a five-member committee headed by retired Supreme Court judge to "examine the need" for a UCC in Gujarat and draft the law accordingly.</p><p>The committee will submit its report in 45 days based on which the state government will take "appropriate action," the chief minister Bhupendra Patel announced in Gandhinagar while addressing the media.<br>Days before the announcement of 2022 Assembly polls, the BJP government had announced for the first time that a committee will be set up as a step towards introducing USS in the state. </p>.UCC helps Uttarakhand government department to prevent marriage of four minor girls.<p>"We are going ahead to give equal rights to all citizens and therefore, we are setting up this committee to examine the requirements of UCC," Patel said, who was accompanied by minister of state for home Harsh Sanghavi.<br>Patel announced that the committee will be chaired by Supreme Court justice (retired) Ranjana Desai while retired IAS CL Meena, advocate RC Kodekar, former vice-chancellor Dakshesh Thaker and social activist Geeta Shroff will be its members. Patel added that the move was "aligned" with the Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision. </p><p>Responding to questions regarding special laws for scheduled tribes and disturbed area act, said to be based on religious lines, Sanghavi mentioned the UCC recently implemented by the Uttarakhand government as a precedent. He said that the customs and special laws meant for the tribals, among other groups, will not be impacted. </p><p>He also claimed that "there is no conflict between UCC and the disturbed area act." He also said that opinions of all stakeholders including Muslim community will be taken. </p>.Uttarakhand UCC is not uniform, targets Muslims.<p>The BJP government in Uttarakhand on January 27 brought UCC into force, the first state to do so after independence. It emphasizes protection of personal liberty and regulates the laws of marriage, divorce, inheritance and live-in relationships. </p><p>It has banned polygamy and child marriages. However, the act does not apply to scheduled tribes who have been notified under the constitution.</p>
