<p>Nearly a week after the formation of a five-member committee headed by retired Supreme Court judge to prepare a draft law for implementation of Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in Gujarat, the committee held its first meeting in Delhi on Wednesday, the state government said.</p><p>The meeting was held at Gujarat Bhavan, New Delhi where discussions were reported to have taken place on the issues of "objectives, scope and outline of the proposed UCC." The meeting was headed by committee's chairperson Desai where its members including retired senior IAS officer C L Meena, advocate R C Kodekar, former vice-chancellor Dakshesh Thakar and social activist Gitaben Shroff were present.</p>.UCC cannot become political instrument to keep country in permanent polarisation: Congress.<p>The committee emphasized the importance of "inclusiveness, judicial equality and uniformity, especially in personal laws, to provide equal rights to women and children and to strengthen the social fabric," a statement released by the government stated.</p><p>On February 4, chief minister Bhupendra Patel had announced the formation of the committee and stated that it will have to submit a report in 45 days. The government has also considered the Uttarakhand government's implementation of UCC as a precedent for dealing with issues regarding special laws for scheduled tribes and disturbed area act, among others. </p>
