Chaayos founder reacts to Singapore envoy's viral post on 'tasteless chai' at Gurugram outlet

Without mentioning the name of the eatery, a Chaayos outlet, the envoy claimed that the cup of tea he had was priced at Rs 169 (inclusive of taxes), but he was disappointed by its taste.

Singapore High Commissioner to India, Simon Wong, took to X to share his experience about a cafe in Gurugram and having a “tasteless” cup of tea there for a very steep price.

He shared two photos along with his post, one showing a stylised 'kulhad' with the Chaayos branding, and another which showed the cafe's interiors.

Without mentioning the name of the eatery in the post, he asserted that he had paid Rs 169 for a cup of tea, only to be disappointed by its taste.

In the post he wrote, "The impossible happened. I just had a cup of tasteless #Chai in Gurgaon. Rs 169 with tax."

Wong’s post gathered a lot of attention online and several users commented on his informal 'review' of the Chaayos oulet.

The post also caught the attention of Chaayos' founder, Nitin Saluja. He replied to Wong on X with an invite to come have chai with him at any Chaayos cafe nearest to Wong, promising a better experience to make up for the disappointment.

He wrote, "Hon'ble Mr Wong, I am Nitin, founder of Chaayos! In the name of deep India SG friendship, I invite you for a cup of Chai at a Chaayos near you! And as we enjoy our chai, i will share our commitment to get every chai right, including our no questions asked chai replacement policy!"

Some other comments on the post read, “Overpriced is always tasteless. Always go to the place where you see a huge crowd of local customers.”

Another comment said, “Sir, sometimes the best chai comes from the most unexpected places like street vendors. Maybe give those a try next time!”

“Sir, you should get a taste of real India. Chai tastes best from the roadside stalls. You & 16 others could have enjoyed a cuppa each, without taxes, in that amount,” read another comment.

Another user extended an invitation to Wong, tweeting, “Agreed sir. It’s tasteless but Rs. 169 + tax is for place like table/seat/ambiance. + Free WiFi. I would like to inviting you for homemade chai for real Bhartiya Chai.”
