<p>Delhi: Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on Tuesday sad that a major decision was taken recently to upgrade passenger train services to help the short distance commuters by augmenting over 100 MEMU (Mainline Electric Multiple Unit) trains. </p><p>These trains currently compose of 8 to 12 coaches and it will be increased to 16 to 20 coaches. A new factory has been set up at Kazipet, Andhra Pradesh, for the manufacturing of these trains, Vaishnaw said. </p><p>He was addressing a gathering after inaugurating India's largest automobile in-plant railway siding, developed under the PM Gati Shakti mission, at Maruti Suzuki India Ltd's Manesar facility in Haryana.</p>.Mumbai witnesses incessant rains; local trains, metro services affected.<p>Referring to Namo Bharat trains, the Minister said: “With good public response to the two operational Namo Bharat trains, the government has decided to produce another 50 new Namo Bharat trains to cater to growing passenger demand.”</p><p>Namo Bharat, earlier called the Vande Metro, is an air-conditioned self-propelled train set that has been built on the Vande Bharat Express platform. </p><p>Namo Bharat trains have been designed for inter-city journeys of shorter duration without reservations in non-suburban routes.</p><p>On Amrit Bharat trains, the minister stated, “Three Amrit Bharat trains are currently operational and have received overwhelming public response. In the coming days, six more Amrit Bharat trains will be launched. Production of 50 more trains is underway.”</p><p>The Amrit Bharat train is a push pull train and sleeper version of Vande Bharat trains having only non-AC sleeper and general second class coaches. </p><p>The Minister said in the last two and a half years, steps have been a taken to increase the number of general coaches. More than 1,200 general coaches were added in just the past year, he said. </p><p>On passenger convenience, the minister said from July 1, onwards only Aadhaar-authenticated and KYC-verified users will be allowed to book Tatkal tickets during the first 30 minutes of the booking window. </p><p>He also said the railways is going pilot project in the Bikaner Division, where passenger reservation charts are now being prepared 24 hours in advance, replacing the earlier norm of 4 hours before train departure.
