India's lesser-known freedom fighters who vanished from the pages of history

As India celebrates 75 years of Independence from British Rule, here we take a look at some of the eminent freedom fighters who fought equally hard but never got any share of the limelight in Indian history.

World War II veteran Lakshmi Sahgal was an Indian National Army officer who was given the Ministry of Women's Affairs in the Azad Hind government. Kumaran from Tiruppur in Tamil Nadu was a freedom fighter who actively participated in India’s independence movement. He suffered serious injuries during a clash with the police while staging a protest in January 1932 and later died. Alluri Sitarama Raju was an Indian revolutionary who led the Rampa Rebellion of 1922–24. He fought in the border areas of East Godavari and Visakhapatnam against the British Raj. Credit: PIB

Rani Gaindinliu, a Naga spiritual and political leader, led a revolt against British rule in India. She was arrested at the age of 16 and was sentenced to life imprisonment by the British government.
