The Centre has lodged an FIR regarding certain documents related to the Ishrat Jahan ‘fake encounter’ case that went missing during P Chidambaram’s tenure as Union home minister.
The home ministry’s decision to lodge an FIR comes ahead of the Uttar Pradesh elections where the Ishrat Jahan case could become an issue between the Congress and the BJP to burnish their credentials in tackling terror.
An under secretary serving in the home ministry filed the FIR at the Parliament Street Police station here under Section 409 (criminal breach of trust by public servants) of the Indian Penal Code, asking the police to probe “why, how and under what circumstances” five documents related to the case went missing.
A senior Delhi Police officer said investigation has been launched following the complaint. The move came after an inquiry panel, headed by an additional secretary, concluded that the papers were “removed knowingly or unknowingly or misplaced” in September, 2009, when P Chidambaram was the home minister.
