Data-driven strategy to be implemented to counter rising terror threat in Jammu

Srinagar: Amid an uptick in terrorist activites in parts of Jammu, security agencies have drawn up an intelligence-led strategy to identify and neutralise emerging threats more effectively

The new plan centers on a data-driven approach to map vulnerable areas, monitor crime trends, and anticipate future patterns in militant operations. Sources said that the intelligence framework has been restructured to focus on zones with signs of increased terrorist activity.

The aim is to shift from conventional tactics to a more precise and analytical counter-terrorism model. “Security forces are relying on comprehensive data analysis to map high-risk zones and monitor movements. This will allow better deployment of resources, faster response times, and improved coordination between various agencies,” sources told DH.

The revamped approach includes real-time information sharing across intelligence units, forensic integration in ongoing probes, and predictive analytics to thwart potential attacks, they said. By examining previous incidents, agencies hope to detect recurring patterns that signal future threats.

Although violence in Kashmir has declined since the revocation of Article 370 in 2019, recent trends point to a troubling shift. Since 2021, militant activity has been gradually moving from the Valley to the relatively quieter Jammu region, raising concerns among security experts.

Districts such as Kathua, Udhampur, Doda, Kishtwar, Reasi, Rajouri, and Poonch—once seen as comparatively peaceful—have witnessed a spike in infiltration and encounters with terrorists, becoming new hotspots of militant operations.

Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha acknowledged the challenge, stating that terrorism in Jammu would be dealt with just as firmly as in Kashmir. “In recent years, we have managed to crush terrorism in Kashmir. However, rising incidents in Jammu are concerning. Our mission is to make both Jammu and Kashmir free of terrorism,” he said.

According to officials, the new action plan is already being implemented in some parts and will be expanded across Jammu in the coming weeks. Community outreach programs may also be introduced to build local trust and gather grassroots intelligence, considered vital in early detection of extremist threats.
