MHA, Tourism Ministry in talks to allow satellite phones for trekkers in Jammu and Kashmir

This initiative aims to overcome challenges, ensuring that travelers, adventurers, and local communities can stay connected and safe in areas where conventional communication networks fail to reach.

Srinagar: In a significant move to enhance the safety of tourists and trekkers in Jammu and Kashmir, the Ministry of Tourism is in advanced discussions with the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), to allow the use of satellite phones in remote and high-altitude areas of the region.

Many parts of Jammu and Kashmir, particularly its mountainous and inaccessible regions, have limited or no mobile network connectivity. This initiative aims to overcome those challenges, ensuring that travelers, adventurers, and local communities can stay connected and safe in areas where conventional communication networks fail to reach.

Director Tourism, Kashmir, Raja Yaqoob said the Ministry of Tourism has taken up the matter with the MHA that satellite phones should be allowed in trekking areas. “The discussions are at an advanced stage and we are hopeful that permission is granted soon,” he said.

The move comes as Kashmir witnesses a surge in adventure tourism, with popular trekking routes such as the Kashmir Great Lakes and Tarsar Marsar drawing significant numbers of adventure tourists, both domestic as well as foreigners.

The new initiative is expected to boost tourism by offering a greater sense of security, particularly for solo trekkers and those exploring areas with minimal infrastructure. The decision to introduce satellite phones is expected to significantly enhance the region’s appeal as a safe and adventurous destination.

Raja Yaqoob also expressed optimism about this year’s tourism season, noting, “Every day, we have 200-500 foreign tourists arriving, which gives immense pleasure and encouragement despite the delayed snowfall.”

Additionally, Yaqoob revealed that Kashmir hosted its first international marathon this year, featuring participants from 13 countries and 59 international tourists.

The government is now working to bring global recognition to Kashmir's adventure tourism by engaging with the World Rafting Federation to organize an international rafting championship.
