<p>Dharwad: After a long wait of over seven months, the state government has finally formed a search committee to appoint a new vice chancellor to the state’s second oldest varsity - <a href="https://www.deccanherald.com/tags/karnatak-university">Karnatak University</a>, Dharwad (KUD).</p>.<p>The vice chancellor’s post had fallen vacant after Prof K B Gudasi, who served for three years, was superannuated on September 30.</p>.<p>Higher Education Minister M C Sudhakar, during his visit to the university in November had said that the government is in no hurry to fill up the post and will take its time to zero in on candidates with strong academic and administrative experience to lead the university.</p>.‘Difficult’ NEET likely to spur demand for engineering seats.<p>Accordingly, three in-charge vice-chancellors were appointed in the last seven months and at present, Prof Jayashri S is serving as in-charge vice chancellor. </p>.<p>The government, on April 24 constituted a search committee to scrutinise the applications and shortlist three candidates.</p>.<p><strong>Search committee</strong></p>.<p>Prof A H Raja Sab, former vice chancellor of Gulbarga university, has been appointed as the chairman of the search committee. The other three members of the committee include, Prof Kailash Chandra Sharma (UGC nominee), Dr T R Thapak (Governor’s nominee) and Dr V G Talawar (Syndicate nominee). Shashidhar G, who is Higher Education Department Deputy Secretary, has been appointed as the convener.</p>.<p><strong>30 KU proffesors apply</strong></p>.<p>The search committee has received as many as 191 applications for the vice chancellor’s post. This includes 30 professors associated with the Karnatak University.</p>.<p>Several candidates with over 25 to 30 years teaching experience from Mysuru, Gulbarga and University of Agricultural Sciences (UAS), Dharwad, too have applied.<br>Sources in the varsity told DH that the search committee is likely to propose three names to the government in next 10 days and the new vice chancellor could be appointed within a fortnight.</p>.<p>A syndicate member on condition of anonymity told DH that since its inception in 1949, 17 vice chancellors have served the Karnatak University. However, none belonging to Scheduled Caste or Scheduled tribe has been appointed so far. There are chances of the government selecting a SC or ST candidate for the V-C post this time.</p>.<p><strong>Financial mess</strong></p>.<p>Even though, KUD has the credit of being the second oldest university in the state, the varsity is facing a severe financial crisis. From last month, the KU has stopped pensions to its retired staff (both teaching and non-teaching) as all its resources have been exhausted.</p>.<p>This apart, poor funding to the varsity by the successive governments too has compounded the problems, as the varsity has not been able to improve its educational infrastructure. Submitting memoranda to all the ministers and MLAs of the region has failed to evoke any response.</p>
