India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for Bengaluru and a yellow alert at various places across Karnataka on Tuesday. An orange alert means very heavy rain of 11 cm to 20 cm, and a yellow alert means heavy rainfall between 6 cm and 11 cm.

Homes in HSR Layout’s 3rd Main Road, 19th cross, have been flooded since Monday morning. The roads, ridden with potholes, is filled with rainwater flooding out of the blocked drain. 

The residents have started parking their cars on an adjacent lane. “Yesterday, there was ankle deep water in my car. Most people experienced the same problem. So we’ve found a temporary parking spot,” said Vikas Sharma, who moved into the locality 7 months ago. To save his garage from flooding, he is building a makeshift barrier. “If the rain gets any heavier, our home will get flooded soon,” he added. 

Moving from HSR Layout towards CBD, Hosur Road saw slow moving traffic with mild water logging prevalent across multiple spots.

Bengaluru Rains Live | IMD changes warning to red alert in 7 districts of Karnataka; Bengaluru still under orange category

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Tuesday evening upgraded the earlier warning to red alert in seven coastal and south interior districts of Karnataka. Meanwhile, Bengaluru, despite consistent rainfall throughout the day is still under the Orange alert category.

The 20 sq km hi-tech corridor, comprising ORR Bellandur and Sarjapur Road has the worst infrastructure for the 5 lakh people who work and live here. Not even a single 500-metre stretch on the four-lane, dual carriageway18-km section of Sarjapur Road (between Iblur Junction and Sarjapur Road Police Station) is pothole-free.

Road repairs done barely three weeks ago between Kodathi Gate and Muthanallur Cross are already peeling off. Half completed drains, absence of footpaths, flooded roads makes this place a commuting hell-hole.

A 9-km trip from Muthanallur Cross on Sarjapur Road to one of the Bellandur IT Parks takes 1.5 hours during peak hours; when it rains, it may take double the time.

Those living in Muthanallur and beyond have no road to exit - the two roads through Huskur to either Doddakanneli towards Bellandur or to Electronic City have been completely destroyed over the years, with no attempt to repair them.

Chandapura-Dommasandra Road near Chandapura-Hosur Road junction which was repaired two weeks back is already cracking. The bridge over the rajakaluve at Chandapura lake is showing signs of demise.

Bengaluru Rains Live | How BBMP responded to rain havoc

*Mahadevapura Zone:
Slabs on roadside drains were removed in flooded Sai Layout, and 1 JCB, 2 tractors, 2 HP pump sets, and 16 personnel worked to get stagnant water flow freely through cleaned drains. Food and drinking water were provided and a health camp was organised for the affected.
*Bommanahalli Zone:
In HSR Layout and Anugraha Layout, pump sets are deployed to drain the water.
*West Zone:
Steps taken to clear stagnant water in the parking area of KR Market
*South Zone:
At flooded Silk Board Junction, officials directed to initiate restoration work on a storm water drain and coordinate with the BMRCL to ensure Metro works don’t hinder rain water flow.
*RR Nagar Zone:
In Jawaregoudanadoddi area, road cutting work was taken up to facilitate water drainage, and cleaning operations are underway at blocked drains. Near Vidyamandir School, an unauthorized wall was pulled down and orders issued for construction of a temporary drain to restore water flow.
Brimming lakes
Out of 183 lakes within BBMP limits, 75 are filled to the brim. Outflow points are being cleaned to ensure excess water flows out of the waterbodies.
Fallen Tree
Ten of the 25 uprooted trees have been cleared and of 25 of the 44 large branches that fell have been removed.

*To NHAI: Take appropriate measures to prevent waterlogging on highway stretches under BBMP limits near Electronic City and desilt side drains

*To BWSSB: Restore damaged stretches on Bannerghatta Road without delay and take measures to prevent overflow due to high water levels in underground drains.

*To BBMP: Build a box culvert to prevent flooding at Kogilu Junction, list railway underpasses prone to waterlogging and work with the railways to implement permanent drainage solutions.

*Remove garbage and silt from footpaths and roadsides along Outer Ring Road, where metro construction is in progress and pedestrian pathways are under repair.
