'Everyday is a learning experience'

One might mistake Ambi Subramaniam for any other 21-year-old. But as soon as he starts tuning the violin, the air is cleared. The bubbly young artiste, who is the son of violin maestro L Subramaniam, says that he is proud to have such a rich legacy of musicians around him.

“I am proud of the legacy I have and I don’t get bogged down by it. Perhaps that will happen when I am 30 or 35. Right now, I am enjoying what I do.

It is good to have such artistes at home as it helps me in more ways than one. For instance, if I think that I have made two mistakes while I am performing, my parents point out several others. So, you know that your standards are set,” he notes with a smile.

The young musician has been training under his father and notes that though he is pretty relaxed as a father, as a teacher, he knows what he wants. “I feel it is very important not to get carried away when one is performing. Having performed all across the world, he feels that the audience in the City is very receptive, “I have regularly been performing here.

The audience here is great and very open to things — there is a scope to innovate  and experiment and people accept it. I also feel that the audience in Europe is very interesting — they listen very intently. There have been times when I have seen some of them sitting cross legged with eyes closed,” he shares.

   Ambi has just completed his MBA and is keen to concentrate on music for now. “Everyday is a learning experience for me and I am learning new things. I play Western  as well as Indian classical and am able to do different things. For now, I will take life as it comes,” he concludes.
