Namma Metro fare hike forces parents, students to consider school, college transfers

Bengaluru: The recent hike in Namma Metro fares has left many parents struggling with increased travel costs, forcing some to rethink their children's schooling options.

For several parents, the metro was an affordable, safe, and convenient mode of transport for their children. However, the fare revision has significantly impacted their budgets.

Parents who spoke to DH said they now spend at least Rs 4,000 per month on metro travel.

“Even if it’s just for eight months a year, that’s Rs 32,000 in travel expenses. We’ve applied for a Transfer Certificate and sought admission at a nearby school, where the transport service costs only Rs 15,000 per year,” one parent shared.

For pre-primary children, the financial strain is even higher, as parents must accompany them. “We specifically chose a school near the MG Road metro station so I could drop and pick up my child. With the revised fares, we’re now considering switching schools,” said Reena, another parent.

Students, too, are feeling the pinch.

Monica CG, a student at National College, Jayanagar, said, “The fare from Hosahalli to the RV metro station was Rs 28 earlier. Now, it’s Rs 48. We can’t afford the increased costs, so I’m looking for a seat at a college closer to home.”
