<p>Dharwad: Karnatak University (KU) has not paid the pension for the month of March due to a financial crisis. Retirement benefits (DCRG) and encashment of earned leave (EL) of some pensioners are also pending.</p>.<p>The 75-year-old university has 1,748 retired employees. A total of Rs 9 crore is required to be paid as pensions every month, while around Rs 12 crore is due for pending DCRG and EL payments for some retired employees.</p>.<p>The university requires Rs 126 crore for pension annually. The government has allocated Rs 55 crore, and the university has been instructed to raise the remaining amount through internal sources.</p>.<p class="bodytext">"We collect about Rs 24 crore from various sources such as course admission fees, library fees, and laboratory fees. However, it is difficult to pay pensions through internal sources. The government has set up a system for paying pensions to retired employees of government degree colleges. If the same system is applied to retired university employees, it would be helpful," said Karnatak University’s Finance Officer Krishnamurthy.</p>.<p class="bodytext">Karnatak University, a key educational centre in North Karnataka, operates five constituent colleges, two postgraduate centres (in Gadag and Karwar), one high school, and one primary school.</p>
