The history of the temple is that it was built by one Shanthappa Shetty, who belong to Lingayat community, a century ago.

Shetty had also contructed a similar temples at Birur and Hiluvalli towns. Community members believe that the Kotturu Basaveshwara Temple also must have been built by him.

A written document for the management of the temple was written in 1928.

At the age of about 80 years, Shetty handed over the temple management to his kin Chandrappa Shetty in 1935.

Later, the temple has been handed over to the Balehonnur Rambhapuri Matt in 1999.
The temple has been renoved at an estimated cost of Rs 7 lakh with the help of donors.

The government too had released Rs 2 lakh for the renovation of temple.
