<p>New Delhi: The pace of growth in average monthly per capita consumption expenditure in urban Karnataka was 5.3% year-on-year in 2023-24, which was less than half of 11.3% expansion recorded in the rural areas of the state, as per data submitted in Parliament by the Centre on Monday.</p>.<p>The average monthly per capita consumption expenditure in rural Karnataka increased from Rs 4,397 in 2022-23 to Rs 4,903 in 2023-24, showing a growth of 11.5%. In urban Karnataka it increased from Rs 7,666 in 2022-23 to Rs 8,076 in 2023-24, registering a growth of 5.3%, as per data shared in Rajya Sabha by Minister of State (independent charge) for Statistics and Programme Implementation, Rao Inderjit Singh, in a written reply. </p>.<p>While the average spending by the people in urban areas remains sharply higher than their rural counterparts, the pace of expansion indicates stress in wages and demand in urban areas.</p>.Karnataka natives among over 4,000 held in anti-narcotic drive in Kerala.<p>In Karnataka, the gap in the pace of growth in rural and urban consumption expenditure in the financial year ended March 2024 was sharper than the all India average. For India, rural average monthly per capita consumption expenditure grew by 9.2% while for urban areas, it was 8.3% year-on-year, in 2023-24.</p>.<p>For rural India, the average monthly per capita consumption expenditure in 2022-23 stood at Rs 3,773. It increased to Rs 4,122 in 2023-24. In urban India it increased to Rs 6,996 in 2023-24 from Rs 6,459 recorded the previous year, the minister informed the parliament referring to the National Statistics Office's (NSO) household consumption expenditure survey data.</p>.<p>The NSO conducted the household consumption expenditure survey for 2023-24 between August 2023 and July 2024. As part of the survey data on 405 food and non-food items consumed by the household were collected. It includes food items like cereals, milk, fruits, vegetables and beverages, non-food items included education, medical, conveyance, entertainment, rent, taxes, clothing and durable goods.</p>.<p>Other states where the pace of growth in average monthly per capita consumption expenditure in urban areas was sharply lower than rural areas include Haryana, Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Delhi, Kerala, Telangana and Uttar Pradesh.</p>.<p>Maharashtra, which is among the top urbanised states, witnessed a different trend. Rural Maharashtra witnessed a sluggish 3.4% expansion in the average monthly consumption expenditure during the year 2023-24 while the consumption growth in urban Maharashtra was 10.6% year-on-year.</p>
