<p> At the age of sixteen, most students would have just about completed their SSLC. At the Ushes special school in Hubli, though, as many as 14 students are being taught to be self-reliant. <br /><br />Today, they are busy making soaps, paper bags, flower vases. More than anything else, they have learnt the importance of dignity of labour, and human values. <br />“I have got my salary, and will buy clothes, books and pens. We sell these soaps that we ourselves make at Rs 120 for six pieces,” explains an enthusiastic Sudarshan. With him are other students, all busy learning one craft or the other.<br /><br />The contribution of the school is immense in shaping the lives of these students. Along with the school’s founders Raghavendra Okade and Roopa Okade, a lot of effort has gone into teaching these students by the school staff. The teachers themselves learnt the art of soap making from Pondicherry and then taught the children how to make herbal soaps. <br />When the children struggled to make the soaps, they were given ice cream mixers to make their job easy. <br /><br />Also, the children are taught to make paper bags.</p>
