Infant dies of alleged anesthesia overdose after parents bring baby for ear piercing

It is said that the Anand and Shubha couple of Hangala village had brought their son to the primary health centre to get the ears pierced. It is alleged that the child turned unconscious after the doctor on duty injected anaesthesia on both the ear lobes.

Gundlupet: A six-month-old male baby died of alleged anaesthesia overdose, at Bommalapura Primary Health Centre, in Gundlupet taluk, Chamarajanagar district, on Monday.

It is said that Anand and Shubha, a couple hailing from Hangala village had brought their son to the primary health centre to get his ears pierced. It is alleged that the child turned unconscious after the doctor injected anaesthesia on both the ear lobes.

The child was immediately brought to a taluk hospital for treatment, but unfortunately was declared dead.

The parents alleged that anaesthesia caused the death of their child with the family members demanding dismissal of doctor and a suitable compensation.

Taluk Health Officer Dr Aleem Pasha said, "The duty doctor had given anaesthesia to prevent pain during ear piercing. The child then developed convulsions and died.

"The exact reason for the death will be known after the post mortem. If the doctor's negligence is confirmed, a report would be submitted to the higher officers recommending action".
