Inflow to Kabini declines, outflow remains same

As the flow of water to the Kabini dam from four reservoirs in Kerala slowly declined on Saturday, Macchur, Hosur, Anemala, Vadakanamala villages under D B Kuppe Grama Panchayat, returned to normalcy and villagers returned home from temporary shelters.

As 70,000 cusecs of water was flowing towards the dam, 15 houses were damaged and more than 100 houses were inundated in the water on Friday. Due to overflowing, the villagers had vacated their houses out of fear. However, the water level began to decline from Saturday afternoon.

D B Kuppe GP President Thirupati said that the water level is declining and the people are returning to their houses.

Outflow at 80,000 cusecs

Even though the inflow declined a little, the outflow from Kabini dam in Beechanahalli, in H D Kote taluk, into the Kapila River continued at 80,000 cusecs. The authorities said that they were discharging large quantity of water as there is a red alert for another three days. They are reducing the water storage of the dam so that the dam can absorb more water if there are any flash floods, according to Deputy Commissioner Abhiram G Sankar. The inflow to the dam was 61,840 cusecs by 4 pm.

Water enters Srikanteshwara temple 

As a large quantity of water is being discharged to the River Kapila from Kabini dam, a flood-like situation continued on the banks on Saturday too. Due to the overflowing of the river, parts of Nanjangud town was flooded and waterlogged in front of Srikanteshwara Temple in the town.

‘Harake Madikatte’, the place where devotees offer vows, was submerged and the devotees were allowed to offered vows on the first floor of the temple.

Water entered low-lying areas such as Saraswathi Colony, Hallada Keri, Rajaji Colony in the town. Pancha Brindavan behind Raghavendra Swamy Mutt also got inundated. Rainwater entered as many as 10 houses in the town on Saturday. On Friday, water entered 14 houses.
