The rebel star of Kannada film industry and former Union minister Ambareesh was cremated with full state honours at the Kanteerava Studios on Monday evening.

Ambareesh's son Abhishek Gowda performed the last rites under the guidance of his wife Sumalatha as per the 'vokkaliga' tradition. All the rituals were performed by priests Chikka Huchchaiah and Konappa Poojari from Maddur, who have been conducting all religious events in Ambareesh's family. The team was assisted by priests from Bengaluru.

The state police gave a 21-gun salute as the National Anthem rent the air. Karnataka Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy handed over the national flag that was draped around Ambareesh's body to Sumalatha.

Former prime minister Deve Gowda, former chief ministers S M Krishna, B S Yeddyurappa and Siddaramaiah led a contingent of heavyweight political leaders from across the political spectrum who paid tributes to Ambareesh.

Cine stars from Sandalwood and the Telugu film industry also paid homage to Ambareesh.

Thousands of fans lined up the streets along the procession route to catch a glimpse of the late actor who captivated the people of Karnataka with stunning performances in classics like 'Naagarahavu', 'Antha' and 'Ranganayaki'.

Ambareesh passed away on Saturday evening due to a massive cardiac arrest. His body was kept at the Kanteerava Stadium for the public to pay their last respects till 4 pm on Sunday.

The body was then airlifted to Mandya, Ambareesh's home district, for fans to pay homage till 9 am on Monday at the Sir MV stadium.

But the initial plans of the state government for the final journey from the Kanteerava Stadium to Kanteerava Studios near Goraguntepalya was troubled by the "inauspicious" 'Rahu Kala’.

The body was brought to Bengaluru around noon and the funeral procession reached Kanteerava Studios around 4.30 pm - the "auspicious" time as suggested by the priests.

After the rituals were completed, Abhishek lit the funeral pyre around 6 pm.
