Karnataka officials discuss better coordination to tackle wildlife crime

Bengaluru: Senior officials from the state and central agencies met here recently to discuss recent trends in wildlife crime and cross-border linkages as well as strategies for improved surveillance.

The meeting saw officials from Wildlife Crime Control Bureau (WCCB) and CID Forest wing holding discussions with the Karnataka Forest Department on crucial issues. Among other things, the need for assistance in investigation and prosecution of cases was also discussed.

Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (Head of Forest Force) Meenakshi Negi, who chaired the meeting, stressed the need for enhanced intelligence sharing, increased coordination between partner agencies for real-time coordination to tackle the rising challenges of illegal wildlife trafficking and accurate forensic and legal training for better conviction rates. Officials also stressed the need for better coordination with customs and other agencies.

WCCB authorities said they will continue to provide technical support, intelligence coordination and specialised training to all enforcement partners.
