Karnataka: Physical education periods not to be used for academic activities, schools told

Bengaluru: The Department of School Education and Literacy has instructed all schools across the state to ensure that students are not engaged in academic activities in periods reserved for physical education and sports. A note to this effect was circulated among all schools after the Karnataka State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (KSCPCR) brought the issue to the department’s attention.

In his letter to the Department of School Education and Literacy, KSCPCR member Thippeswamy wrote, “During our interaction with students, we learnt that periods dedicated to physical education were being used for other subjects, confining students to the classroom and driving their stress levels higher. Since sports play an important role in a child’s overall development, it is necessary to allow children to play outside during these periods.”

He pointed out that allowing children to play outdoors improved their concentration levels, and helped improve their academic performance.

The department’s circular instructed all schools to abide by the 2025-25 calendar, wherein a set number of periods were exclusively reserved for physical education. The department has tasked the Block Education Officers to visit schools in their jurisdiction, and ascertain whether students are spending enough time outdoors. Many child rights activists too had flagged this lapse on the part of schools, expressing concern for the mental health of children.
