<p>Mangaluru: With the 61-day seasonal fishing ban ending on Thursday, a few trawl boats will venture for deep sea fishing on Friday, informed Vani Salian owner of the fishing boat--'Saanidhya'.</p><p>The remaining 995 trawl boats in Mangaluru will venture into deep sea fishing either on August 2 or 3 after the special pooja at Urwa Marigudi temple on Friday, Vani Salian told DH. The 200-odd Purse seiners will embark on deep sea fishing after the traditional `samudra pooja' on August 10, she said and recollected that they got only two months of fishing during previous fishing season. </p>.From guns to gills: PM hails transformation of ex-Naxalites into fish farmers in Jharkhand.<p>During the previous fishing season-2024-25, fish production in Karnataka (including inland and marine) was 9,62,959 metric ton, a slight dip by 1.33% when compared to fish production in 2023-24 which was 9,75,998 metric ton. The total marine fish production in Dakshin Kannada, Udupi and Uttara Kannada districts in 2024-25 was 5,13,168 mt, a dip by five per cent when compared to marine fish production in 2023-24 (5,42,675 mt). </p><p>On the contrary, the inland fish production in state increased by 24 percent. Inland fish production across state which was 4,33,323 mt in 2023-24, increased to 5,74,792 mt in 2024-25, informed sources in department of Fisheries. According to Department of Fisheries Director Dinesh Kallar, many initiatives taken to support local fishermen engaged in inland fish production had been paying dividends.</p><p>"A few days ago Krishna Bhagya Jal Nigam Limited (KBJNL) had handed over 25 acres of land in Alamatti in Vijayapur district free of cost to department of Fisheries for the establishment of a fish seed production farm. The farm to be developed at a total cost of Rs 13 crore will be able to meet the fish seed requirements of north Karnataka," Dinesh said and added that the tender process for the project had been completed. </p> <p><strong>Fish prices also dip</strong></p><p>Unlike in previous years, the value of fish production including marine fish fell drastically in previous fiscal. The value of total fish production in 2023-24 which was Rs 1300206 lakh, dipped to Rs 1132950 lakh in 2024-25. The value of marine fish in three coastal districts in 2023-24 (5,42,675 mt) which was Rs 808612 fell to Rs 613812 in 2024-25 (513168 mt). Experts have attributed the decrease in marine fish catch mainly to rising sea temperature. </p>
