NLSIU reserves 10 more seats for Karnataka students

Bengaluru: The National Law School of India University (NLSIU), Bengaluru, is providing g additional 10 seats to Karnataka students for the BA LLB (Hons) programme for the 2025-26 academic year in addition to the 25% seats on the total intake it is horizontally (compartmentalised) reserving.

In a recently revised seat matrix, the university has announced that it has increased the total intake for the BA LLB (Hons) programme from existing 300 to 310 for the 2025-26 academic year, including 10 seats for Karnataka students which will be filled through the Common Law Admission Test (CLAT) based on the merit.

Recently, Bangalore University had asked for 10 seats for local students from NLSIU to allot an additional seven acres of land sought by the institute at the Jnana Bharathi campus. But later it left the discretion of the government to decide on the seats.

However, the state government was clear about it. After discussing with Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, Higher Education Minister Dr M C Sudhakar, the Bangalore University conveyed the same to the authorities of NLSIU and demanded 10 seats for Karnataka students in return for the additional land allotted to the premier institute.

In the notification, NLSIU stated, “Seventy-five seats, comprising 25% of the total intake, shall be reserved horizontally (compartmentalised) for Karnataka students and ten seats for Karnataka students shall be allotted as per the entrance examination merit list.”

As per the data available since 2021 under compartmentalised horizontal reservation, NLSIU is giving 25 per cent reservation for Karnataka students and according to that, during 2023-24, 60 of 240 BA LLB (Hons) students, 25 of 100 LLM students, and 30 of 120 LLB (Hons) students were from Karnataka.

Who are eligible?

Candidates, who have studied for not less than 10 years in a recognised educational institution in Karnataka, shall be eligible to be considered as Karnataka students.

Study certificates, issued by duly recognised and affiliated educational institutions, which attest that the candidate has completed at least 10 years of schooling in Karnataka, shall have to be produced at the time of counselling.

Even students, who have not completed 10 years of study in Karnataka, shall be eligible to apply if they are the children of defence personnel/ex-servicemen, who at the time of joining the service have declared their hometown to be in Karnataka; children of employees of the state government who have served or are serving outside Karnataka corresponding to the candidate’s years of study outside Karnataka and children of serving or retired employees belonging to the Karnataka cadre of All India Service( IAS/IPS/IFS). 

If the candidates have studied in Karnataka for three years, they must prove that their parents were serving outside Karnataka for at least seven years corresponding to their period of study outside Karnataka. If the candidates have not studied in Karnataka continuously for at least one year, they must prove that their parents were serving outside Karnataka for at least 10 years corresponding to their period of study outside.
