Senior Congress leader Margaret Alva has noted that the number of women candidates fielded in Lok Sabha elections was disappointing.

Most of the parties are male-dominated, and proposals to field many women in elections are not entertained, though they are able, she lamented.

Alva also noted that she was not consulted when JD(S) was allowed to field its candidate in Uttara Kannada constituency. “I opposed, but I had no choice, as it was the party’s decision. My son accompanied the JD(S) candidate when he filed nomination, but R V Deshpande was not there. I have asked my supporters there to work for alliance candidate Anand Asnotikar,” she said. Alva was addressing a women’s convention in Hubballi on Wednesday.
