<div>PWD and District in-charge Minister Dr H C Mahadevappa said on Saturday that Maharshi Valmiki played an prominent role in evolution of Indian culture and some vested interests were attempting to “manipulate” it. <br /><br />“The values in Valmiki’s Ramayana strengthened Indian society and he made an attempt to bring the deprived classes to the mainstream of society. But, a section of people is trying to divide the nation on the basis of caste and defaming Valmiki,” the minister said. <br /><br />He was speaking after inaugurating Maharshi Valmiki Jayanti, jointly organised by the district administration, Mysuru City Corporation (MCC), Mysuru Urban Development Authority (MUDA), PWD, SC/ST Welfare department and Taluk Nayaka Sangha, at Kalamandira in the city.<br /><br />The minister said that nature was the guru for Valmiki and going beyond caste and community, he preached humanity and became ‘Vishwamanava’, thousands of years ago. It is possible to create a healthy and wealthy society by following the principles enunciated by Valmiki.<br /><br />Taking the names of the leaders like Dr B R Ambedkar and Periyar E V Ramasamy Naikar, the minister said while people from deprived class of society built the country, anti-social elements were spreading false messages about the great people, who struggled for social welfare.<br /><br />He said that the state government led by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah was committed for the development of the deprived classes. “The government is constructing 100 Valmiki bhavans across the state and work on around 60 of them is in the final stage. A statue in front of the Legislators’ House in Bengaluru will be unveiled on the next Valmiki Jayanti day,” he said. <br /><br />MLAs M K Somashekar, G T Devegowda, and Vasu, Taluk Panchayat president Kalamma Kemparamaiah and Zilla Panchayat member Beerihundi Basavanna were present.<br />Earlier during the day, a large number of people took part in a procession of Valmiki’s portrait. The procession commenced from Kote Anjaneya Swami temple, passed through the major streets of the city and concluded at Kalamandira. Cultural troupes performed folk arts all along the route. <br /></div>
