Mumbai: In a major breakthrough, the police have arrested a 65-year-old man, Sayyad Nadir Shah Abbas Khan, who is an accused in the December 1992-January 1993 communal riots in Mumbai and was on a run for three decades.

The riots had taken place in the aftermath of the demolition of Babri structure at Ayodhya on 6 December, 1992.

Khan had jumped bail around 31 years ago.

The accused was arrested on Monday by the Rafi Ahmed Kidwai police station.

Khan was accused in a case of attempt to murder and unlawful assembly during the riots, however, after securing bail, he never returned for court hearings.

The court issued a non-bailable warrant against him and declared him as a wanted accused in the case.

Based on technical intelligence, the police laid a trap on information Khan was going to visit his residence in Sewree after which he was trapped.
