Bombay Natural History Society launches green classroom initiative in Goregaon

Mumbai: India’s leading organisation in nature research and conservation, Bombay Natural History Society (BNHS), has announced the launch of its Green Classroom Initiative through the Conservation Education Centre (CEC) in Goregaon.

The innovative programme is designed for middle school and high school teachers and students. It supports the goals of National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which emphasises experiential, multidisciplinary learning and environmental awareness as essential components of education.

The Green Classroom Initiative is designed to make middle school and high school environmental education hands-on, engaging, and practical by transforming school classrooms into eco-conscious learning spaces.

It equips middle school and high school teachers and students to implement sustainable practices such as composting, waste segregation, biodiversity-friendly activities, and the creative reuse of materials—turning classrooms into models of environmental stewardship.

“NEP 2020 clearly calls for integrating environmental education across all levels, encouraging learning that is rooted in local contexts and ecological realities. Our Green Classroom Initiative directly answers that call,” said Aqsa Majgaonkar, Senior Education Officer, BNHS CEC.

The programme aligns with Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 4 (Quality Education) and SDG 13 (Climate Action), by cultivating values of sustainability, responsibility, and community action from a young age.

Each participating school will receive resource material, activity guidelines, and long-term mentorship from BNHS educators to help implement green practices effectively.
