<p>Mumbai: 'Doctors are next to God' holds good and it was practically experienced during the Covid pandemic. However a shocking case involving an old audio clip has come to light from Udgir in Latur of Maharashtra in which a doctor can be heard instructing a colleague to “kill” a Covid-19 patient to make beds available in the hospital.</p><p>The audio clips are purportedly between a Dr Shashikant Deshpande, who was then additional district surgeon at the Udgir Government Hospital in Latur and one Dr Shashikant Dange, who was posted at a Covid Care Centre.</p>.Karnataka: 70-year-old suspected Covid patient dies during treatment in Belagavi.<p>The patient, Kausar Fatima, wife of Dayami Ajimoddin Gaussoddin (53), had later recovered from the infection. </p><p>Fatima, then around 41, was admitted to hospital from April 15 to 25 in 2021 after she was found Covid-19 positive. The police were verifying the authenticity of the audio clip,” Inspector Dilip Gade said.</p><p>The FIR was lodged under Indian Penal Code sections 119 (…public servants who conceal a design to commit an offence that it is their duty to prevent…) and 295 A (…penalizes acts of outrage against religious sentiments. It criminalizes the deliberate and malicious act of insulting or attempting to insult the religion or religious beliefs of any class of citizens by words, signs, or visible representations…). </p><p>The incident under investigation happened during the peak of the Covid pandemic. </p><p>The Udgir police will now record the statements of Dr Deshpande and Dr Dange.</p><p>During the purported call, Dr Deshpande enquired about bed availability, to which Dr Dange informed him that there were no vacant beds. The complainant claimed that he distinctly heard Dr Deshpande saying: “Kill the Dayami patient. You’re used to dealing with such people.”</p><p>Dr Deshpande also allegedly made a caste-based slur during the conversation, as per the man’s complaint.</p>
