<p>Ahmedabad: In what is said to be the first such case after transfer of sentence agreement between India and the United Kingdom, a murder convict sentenced to 28 years imprisonment was transferred to Surat's Lajpore jail to serve his remaining sentence. </p><p>A police team got the custody of the 27-year-old Jigukumar Sorthi from the UK authority and brought him to Surat on Tuesday. </p><p>Subsequently, he was lodged at Lajpore central jail after completing the procedure. </p>.Delhi Police nab cyber criminal from Surat for Rs 1.42 lakh fraud.<p>Surat police commissioner Anupam Singh Gehlot said in a press conference that Sorthi is a resident of Umargaon in Valsad district who was sentenced to 28 years of imprisonment in a murder case. </p><p>Gehlot said that Sorthi has already served several years in the UK jail and will spend the remaining term in Surat. He added that such a transfer has taken place in view of transfer of sentence agreement between India and the UK.</p><p>According to UK media reports, in 2020, Sorthi stabbed Bhavini Parvin, 21, in Leicester at her home in front of her mother for calling off their wedding. They were engaged in 2017 in India. </p><p>According to the Ministry of External Affairs' website, "transfer of sentenced persons agreement is an agreement between countries that allows prisoners to serve their sentences in their home country." It states that such treaties allow convicts to be transferred to his or her home country to serve the prison sentence. </p><p>A prisoner has to notify the Indian authorities abroad and the application should be approved by the two countries. "For the prisoner to serve the rest of his/her sentence in India, there must not be a standing appeal against his committal to prison in the foreign country," the website mentions. </p>
