'Medical seats can't remain vacant,' Supreme Court asks Centre to talk to stakeholders

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Friday said that the seats in medical courses cannot remain vacant and asked the Centre to hold a meeting with the relevant stakeholders to chalk out the vacant seats issue.

A bench of Justices B R Gavai and K V Viswanathan was hearing a plea raising the concern of vacant seats.

The court flagged the issue earlier too after being informed that the super specialty seats in medical courses remained unfilled.

During the course of the hearing on Friday, the lawyer for the petitioner said, it would be appropriate if the Centre held a meeting with the stakeholders and come out with a concrete proposal.

The court then directed for the meeting to be held by the Centre for resolving the issue of vacant seats in medical institutions throughout the country.

Directing the Centre that the needful be done within three months, the court scheduled the matter for further hearing in April.

The Centre, on its part, said the committee comprising the stakeholders was constituted and it had given its recommendations and it was in the process to sort out the vacant seats issue.
