Supreme Court tells EC to display logical discrepancy list of voters at local level in Tamil Nadu's SIR

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Thursday told the Election Commission to display the names of those on the "logical discrepancies" list at gram panchayat bhavans and block offices, where documents and objections will also be submitted, during the ongoing special intensive revision of electoral rolls in various states.

A bench of Chief Justice of India Surya Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi asked the poll panel to put out those names of the electors at local level as senior advocates Kapil Sibal, Amit Anand Tiwari and lawyer Vivek Singh, on behalf of the DMK, contended that the electors, who have been put in the "logical discrepancies" list, should be given adequate time and opportunity to claim inclusion in the electoral rolls in poll-bound Tamil Nadu.

After the completion of the revision in Bihar, the second phase of the exercise is being carried out across nine states -- Chhattisgarh, Goa, Gujarat, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal and three Union territories - Andaman and Nicobar, Lakshadweep and Puducherry.

In a related development, the Supreme Court reserved its verdict on a batch of pleas including the one filed by NGO Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) challenging the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bihar.

The pleas filed before the court that claimed that the poll panel does not have powers under Article 326 of the Constitution, the Representation of the People Act, 1950 and the Rules made under it to carry out the SIR on such a larger scale.

The SIR in Bihar was conducted in the first phase.

The petitioners sought a direction to set aside the EC's SIR order of June 24, 2025, for being in violation of Articles 14, 19, 21, 325, 326 of the Constitution and provisions of Representation of People Act, 1950 and Registration of Electors Rules, 1960. The court had earlier refused to stay the process.
