Miss World pageant to begin in Hyderabad on May 10

Hyderabad: Amid escalating tensions along the Line of Control, Hyderabad is set to host the 72nd Miss World competition beginning Saturday. Beauty queens from nearly 110 countries have already arrived for the event, which culminates with the grand finale on May 31.

Organizers have planned numerous outdoor engagements across Telangana in the coming weeks. Saturday's inaugural ceremony will take place under heightened security measures due to the current geopolitical situation, with security reinforced at all event venues and hotels accommodating contestants.

This marks the first time in Miss World's 73-year history that a country hosts the pageant for two consecutive years, following the 71st edition held in Mumbai in March 2024. India's relationship with Miss World began in 1966 when Dr Reita Faria became the first Indian and Asian to win the title. She later chose medicine over modeling, demonstrating that beauty and intellect can harmoniously coexist.

With six Miss World titles, India shares the record for most wins with Venezuela, establishing both nations as the most successful in the pageant's history. The United Kingdom follows with five crowns, while countries like the United States and South Africa have secured three wins each. And this year, Nandini Gupta of Rajasthan is representing India carrying the hopes of a billion as she takes centre stage on home soil.

The contestants will experience Telangana's living heritage throughout their stay. Celebrations officially commence on May 10 with the grand opening ceremony at Gachibowli Indoor Stadium, where participants will be introduced amid vibrant folk and tribal performances showcasing Telangana's cultural richness.

From May 12 to 18, participants will enjoy immersive experiences including spiritual tours to Buddhavanam, heritage walks through Charminar and Laad Bazaar, and visits to iconic landmarks such as Warangal Fort, Ramappa Temple, Pochampally handloom village, and the Telangana Police Command and Control Centre.

The programme continues from May 20 to 24 with talent competitions, fashion showcases, arts and crafts workshops at Shilparamam, and an IPL cricket match experience for selected groups. On May 26, the Beauty with a Purpose Gala takes center stage at HITEX, accompanied by cultural performances and a Telangana Food Festival.

The month-long celebration culminates with the Grand Finale on May 31 at HITEX, featuring a red carpet event at 5:30 pm followed by the coronation gala from 10 pm to 1 am. To conclude the festivities, the newly crowned Miss World and titleholders will attend a special high tea with the Governor and Chief Minister on June 2 at Raj Bhavan, coinciding with Telangana Formation Day.
