<p>Lucknow: Forty four years after 24 dalits, including seven women, were shot dead by armed assailants at Dihuli village in <a href="https://www.deccanherald.com/tags/uttar-pradesh">Uttar Pradesh</a>’s Firozabad district, a special court on Tuesday sentenced three accused persons to death.</p><p>The court had earlier convicted the three accused and had fixed Tuesday for pronouncing the quantum of punishment in the case. Although the incident had taken place in Firozabad district, the trial was moved to the neighbouring Mainpuri district on the direction of the Allahabad High Court.</p><p>The court also imposed a fine of Rs 50,000 each on the accused persons. </p>.Internal quota: Karnataka ministers urge Dalit bodies to be patient.<p>According to the prosecution, the special court sentenced Kaptan Singh, Ram Sewak and Rampal to death. In all 17 persons were charged with the crime but during the pendency of the trial, 13 accused died while one had been absconding.</p><p>According to the prosecution, a group of assailants had attacked the dalits at Dihuli village on November 18, 1981 suspecting some residents of informing the police about the hideout of some members of the gang which led to an encounter with the cops.</p><p>The assailants barged into the houses of the dalits and shot dead 24 dalits, including women and children before looting their belongings. Nine persons had suffered injuries in the incident.</p><p>The verdict was hailed by the members of the victims’ families in Dihuli village. The residents had demanded the death penalty for the accused persons. ‘’Justice has finally been delivered,’’ said a resident.</p><p>The prosecution lawyers said that the guilty persons had 30 days to challenge the verdict of the special court in the High Court.</p>
