'Won't work 5 days in office. PERIOD': London-based Indian employee refuses to 'drain income' on commute

An Indian woman living in London refused to work five days a week from office, citing expensive commute.

Sharing on LinkedIn, the 25-year-old wrote, "I won’t be working 5 or 4 days in the office. PERIOD. Call it entitled, spoiled Gen-Z behavior or 'Gen-Lay-Z'- doesn’t matter."

Questioning why she should spend her "already-taxed-to-death salary" on expensive transport system, she dismissed the idea of just sitting in an office and dial into online calls.

"Early Millennials, Gen X and boomers at some point in their careers got free lunches, reimbursed travel, travelling to new places for work, bonuses, stock options and actual face-to-face meetings with clients over coffee. Now? A slice of lukewarm pizza and a beer after work if you’re lucky," the post read.

Talking about the salary and cost of living, she wrote, "We’re expected to survive on salaries from 5 to 10 years ago while paying 5 to 10 times the cost of living."

Comparing the current generation to the older one, she mentioned about the differences saying they have "houses, savings, and vacations—yet we’re the ones being told we need to 'show up' more."

"We do show up, just in ways that actually make sense. We prioritise flexibility, our health, and, frankly, not draining a third if not more of our income just to be physically present at a desk," she added.

Further she wrote how she has pivoted into freelancing and feels has "real control over her work".

"Maybe that’s the future, not chasing promotions in a system that doesn’t work for us, but building careers on our own terms," she wrote further.

The post has garnered over 7k likes and a flurry of comments, many agreeing to what she wrote.

"At 50 years old I couldn’t agree more with everything you’ve said, whatever your age group we are being robbed daily," commented a user.

"I completely agree with everything you've said, except I'm a millennial and I never got any of those perks," wrote a second.

A third user wrote, "What an amazing way to put this. I see so many people writing about the so-called 'tantrums' of Gen-Zs at work. When in reality these 'tantrums' are actually repercussions!"
