Zakir Hussain passes away: A look at his wife, children, family; all you need to know

Zakir Hussain, the legendary tabla maestro, passed away at a hospital in San Francisco at the age of 73, his family announced on Monday. Hussain was hospitalised for the last two weeks. He was in the ICU after his condition deteriorated. He died due to complications arising out of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, according to his family.

Revered as the greatest tabla player of his generation, Hussain is survived by his wife, Antonia Minnecola, and their two daughters, Anisa Qureshi and Isabella Qureshi.

Hussain was married to Antonia Minnecola, a Kathak dancer and teacher. Antonia, an Italian-American, was also Hussain's manager. The couple met in the late 1970s in California's Bay Area. Antonia had just begun her dance training then.

Anisa, the eldest daughter of Hussain, graduated from UCLA. She is now a filmmaker. 3:10 to Yuma (2007), Mr Woodcock (2007) and Just Like Heaven (2005) are some her well-known works. Isabella is currently studying dance in Manhattan.

Hussain was the son of tabla legend Allah Rakha. He was born in Mumbai on March 9, 1951. He studied at St Michael's High School and St Xavier's College, Mumbai.

Hussain had three brothers and three sisters, Taufiq Qureshi, was a percussionist, and Fazak Qureshi, was also a tabla player. Munwar, the third brother, tragically passed away at a young age after being attacked by a rabid dog.

Bilquis, his oldest sister, died before Hussain's birth. Razia, passed away hours before the death of their father in 2000, due to complications from cataract surgery. Hussain is survived by another sister Khurshid.

Countless fans paid tribute to the artist who transcended boundaries, of music and of geography, and went too soon.
