Government lower primary school, Mullur village in Shanivarasanthe, has successfully experimented an eco-friendly project, based on the theme of 'reduce, reuse and recycle', utilising organic waste for best results.

Under the guidance of C S Satish, winner of the 'state-level best teacher award', who is serving as the assistant teacher at the school, students constructed a gobar gas unit.

To make the children understand the theory better, Satish decided to set up a gobar gas unit at the school premises itself. Vegetable peels, food leftovers, leaves, and animal droppings were put in the tank and the gas generated from the tank is connected to the stove. The decomposed waste is used as manure for plants.

The rainwater harvesting tank which had been defunct was modified into gobar gas unit, Satish said. Students with the help of Satish and Headmaster Manjunath repaired the tank and connected pipes. The waste collection tank was prepared out of an old water tank.

Earlier, the students had also set up a solar park under his guidance to provide electricity to computers and lights in the school.

The school development committee members, resource person Madhukumar and teachers from other schools also appreciated the initiative and have been creating awareness on the eco-friendly project.
