Police in Kozhikode on Wednesday detained six people, including a CPM branch secretary, in connection with a complaint by a 30-year-old woman that she suffered a miscarriage following a physical assault by the accused.

The accused are Thettalil Thampy, a local branch secretary of the CPM, Sarasamma, Syedalavi, Binoy, Joy and Ranjith. Another person arrested earlier in connection with the case, Prajeesh, is on remand.

On the night of January 28, Sibi Chacko was attacked at his home in Kodenchery by Syedalavi and his accomplices, in connection with a land dispute.

Sibi's wife Josna, who was four months pregnant, intervened in an effort to stop the assault but was reportedly kicked by Thampy and Prajeesh.

She was admitted in a hospital, where the family was informed about a blood clot in the placenta. Josna had a spontaneous abortion on February 2.

The Kodenchery Police registered a case on February 3.

An official at the Kodenchery police station told DH that the six men had surrendered at the station early on Wednesday.

Sibi and Josna had launched a sit-in protest in front of the station on Tuesday, claiming police inaction in tracing the attackers.

The family said that the police did not help even after calls were made while Sibi was being attacked. Josna said the family had received threats before the attack.
