Cosmetics enhance beauty. But, it always comes at a price. Several studies have concluded that products like nail polishes, antibacterial soaps, anti-ageing creams, hair sprays and perfumes have a severe effect on female fertility because of the toxic chemicals present in them.

Several endocrine-disrupting chemicals can cause abnormal ovarian function, miscarriages and infertility. Antibacterial soaps contain triclosan, which is linked to endocrine disruption. Parabens are used soaps, shampoos and conditioner to prevent the growth of bacteria. But too much of it can impact your fertility.

Volatile organic compounds, formaldehyde, DPT and toluene in nail polish, are risk factors for infertility, misconception and even birth defects. Polish removers contain acetone, methyl methacrylate, toluene, and ethyl acetate. Toluene is known to affect the central nervous system and harm reproductive organs.

Exposure to these chemicals can lead to preterm birth, miscarriage, a child with learning disabilities, cognitive impairment, behavioural issues and even damage to the kidney, brain and the nervous system.

Excess use of cosmetics can be disastrous for fertility and the chances of conceiving may reduce drastically owing to their serious effects on the reproductive environment. It is best to avoid the use of such chemicals even after conception.
