Education minister Ashish Shelar on Wednesday took to Twitter and announced the Maharashtra government's decision to declare a holiday for schools and junior colleges in Mumbai, Thane and Konkan region in view of the red alert.

All schools to remain closed today amid heavy rain warning

All the schools and junior colleges in Mumbai, Thane and Konkan region of Maharashtra would remain closed today in view of the "extremely heavy" rains warning by the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD).

The "extreme and heavy rainfall" alertindicates a precipitation of more than 204 mm in 24 hours starting Thursday morning. Mumbai is expected to receive heavy rainfall on Friday, but Raigad will continue to receive extremely heavy showers that day also, according to an IMD official.

To provide assistance in the prevailing flood situation in Gujarat and Maharashtra,South Western Air Command hasdeployed 8 helicopters and more are standing by for this task, said Chief Air Marshal HS Arora.

In addition, transport aircraft are ferrying in relief material and teams as per requirements projected by the state government, he added.

"So far, all rescue requirements for marooned people have been completed successfully. We are committed to meet all demands and help and save our fellow citizens," said Arora.

Karnataka has so far discharged 4.50 lakh cusecs water from the Almatti dam, a move which is expected to ease flood situation in Kolhapur and Sangli districts of Maharashtra.

An official in the Chief Minister's Office (CMO) said at present the discharge from the dam on the Krishna river in Bijapur district of neighbouring Karnataka was 4,50,000 cusecs (cubic foot per second).

Besides Sangli and Kolhapur, Satara, Pune and Solapur districts are also reeling under floods.

Maharashtra minister Girish Mahajan on Friday stoked a controversy after two selfie video clips surfaced purportedly showing him smiling and waving hands cheerfully as he surveyed parts of the flood-hit district.

Prices of some items like ginger havespiralled and areselling between Rs 300 to 325 per kg while tomato is being sold over Rs 60 a kg.

The shortage is being felt in the commercial capital and neighbouring areas of Palghar,Thane, and Raigad. In fact,the far suburbs of Mumbai which has agricultural lands,too had faced floods over two successive weekends - compounding the problem.

An Indian Navy rescue team from Naval Base, Karwar, responded to a request for assistance from the SP Uttara Kannada to provide assistance to people stranded near Kadra Dam, Mallapur Kurnipet, Kaiga, on 06 Aug 19.

The team, which included divers of the Navy, was on task till 2200 hrs and was successfully able to evacuate about 300 people to safety.

Heavy downpour disrupts local train services beyond Thane and in Khandala
Due to heavy downpour in several areas in Mumbai and Thane, local train services are delayed. There has been no train running between the Kasara-Titwala section for the past 50 minutes whereas, Navi Mumbai has also been witnessing heavy winds. A heavy boulder also fell on the railway tracks in the Khandala section which has disrupted services in the ghat area, however, work for restoration has begun and services should resume soon.

The IMD hasadvised people to avoid outing as far as possible. It said that the sea will be rough, and fisherman warnings, heavy rainfall warnings have been issued.

If water level crosses the Barvi river dam capacity, then water will be released to Barvi river. Currently water level is at 71 m which is very close to the danger capacity of the dam marked at 72 meters. If it continues to pour heavily, the dam might release the water tomorrow which is likely to affect Ambernath, Murbad, Ulhasnagar and Kalyan areas, states a press release issued by Thane District Collector's office.

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an alert on the rains in Mumbai. It said that rainfall will continue with gusty winds and a high tide of 4.5 m plus will occur on Sunday afternoon.

Due to heavy & continuous rains and accumulation of water in few sections, services have been suspended on main line and harbour line of CR suburban section at 8.00 hrs as a precautionary measure to avoid hardship to commuters later...

Heavy rains continue in Mumbai, Konkan

Heavy rains continued in India's commercial capital of Mumbai and the coastal Konkan region on Sunday.
The Nashik and Pune districts are also getting rainfall.
Due to continuous heavy rains, there is an accumulation of water between Ambernath and Badlapur and on harbour line at Chunabhatti - on the Central Railway route. Rail traffic has been suspended beyond Ambernath and on Harbour line between Vadala and Kurla - Central Railway.

370 houses submerged in floods

The Rayate bridge connecting Murbad to Kalyan was damaged partially due to the rains, resulting in traffic being suspended.

"Traffic on the route has been suspended till further orders. The Ulhas river has been overflowing since the past two days and has caused flooding in Badlapur, Titwala and Kalyan,"Murbad Tehsildar, Amol Kadam told PTI.

4 rescued from flooded Maha health centre after 13-hour ordeal

Four persons wererescuedat 1pm on Saturdayafterthey got stranded around midnight in afloodedprimaryhealthcentrein Murbad in Thane district, an official said.

Arescueteam of the local Zila Parishad and firemen managed to bring the four, including a woman, out of the PHC using ropes, he said.

"They remained in thefloodedPHCfrommidnight till around 1pm on Saturday. Heavy rains have causedfloodingin Kishor area of Murbad where the PHC is situated. The wall of thehealthcentrecollapsed, leading to water gushing inside," Thane ZP official Manish Denge said.

IAF chopper airlifts over 120 people stranded in Thane

The Indian Air Force on Saturday airlifted over 120 people stuck in different parts of Thane district in Maharashtra due to flash floods triggered by heavy rains, an official said.

While at least 70 people were stranded on the terrace of a petrol pump in Badlapur town, around 65 km from Mumbai, another 45 people were stuck at a private resort in Shahad, 46 kilometres away, the state disaster control room official said.

Empty baggage container hits parked aircraft at Mum airport; none hurt

An empty baggage container "accidentally" hit a stationary aircraft of full-service carrier Vistara at the Mumbai airport on Saturday but no one was injured in the incident, the airline said.

There were no passenger or crew inside the aircraft which has temporarily been grounded for"repair" work, Vistara said in a statement.

"Gusty wind led an empty baggage container of another airline accidentally roll to one of our aircraft parked at Mumbai airport early this morning, leaving a dent on the starboard side of one of the engines," it stated.

There were no passengers or crew on board, it said adding that "the aircraft will be grounded for some time for repair work and consequentially affect our schedule on some routes.

Heavy rains in Trimbakeshwar, water oozes from Shiv Linga base

With 140 mm rain recorded in Trimbakeshwar in Nashik district of Maharashtra in the last 24 hours ending on Saturday morning, water has started oozing from the base of the Shiv Linga in the sanctum sanctorum of the famous temple.

According to officials of the Trimbakeshwar Devasthan Trust, the water started trickling out from the 'Jyotirlinga' foundation this morning amid heavy rains. As per the legend, a channel of the Godavari river, which originates from the Brahmagiri mountain on whose foothills the temple is located, flows at the base of the Shiv Linga.

As per local administration, Trimbakeshwar recorded 70 mm rain in the eight hours from 8 AM to 4 PM on Saturday. With this, the quantum of rainfall received in Trimbakeshwar from 8 AM on Friday to 4 PM on Saturday stands at 210 mm.

The heavy rains also caused famous 'Kushavarta' pond to overflow in the town. Water has also gushed into shops and houses, officials said.

The unique feature of the Trimbakeshwar Jyotirlinga is its three faces embodying Lord Brahma, Lord Vishnu, and Lord Shiva.

Questions raised over proceeding of the train

Questions were raised as to why the train was not stopped and proceeded for onward journey when it was aware that there was inundated tracks ahead. "The train had proceeded on its way as water had begun receding, but after a sudden spell of intense rainfall, coupled with overflowing of the Ulhas river, the train was completely stuck in deep water at Vangani," a CR official said.
